A semi-annual report on worker protests and evolving labour regulations in Iran

January 30, 2023

This 6‑month report offers a detailed examination of labour protests and evolving policy measures affecting Iranian workers. Drawing on primary interviews, media reviews, and social media monitoring, the analysis outlines key dynamics, including:

  • Over a dozen instances where trade union and labour activists—among dozens affected—faced dismissals, salary denials, prosecutions, arrests, or imprisonment.
  • Two detailed tables summarizing observations on labour protests and emerging issues, highlighting sector-specific challenges in industries such as oil, steel, automotive, manufacturing, and telecommunications.
  • Evidence of the government’s dual approach of suppressing protests while yielding to some worker demands in certain cases, alongside legislative proposals that could further jeopardize labour rights.

As the inaugural installment in a series of biannual reports, this publication aims to equip policy makers and civil society organizations with actionable insights for designing targeted support programs that address both immediate challenges and long-term needs in Iran’s diverse labour environment.
